Tänä aamuna löysin kylppäristä ison torakan! Luulin sen olevan kuollut, kun se makasi jalat pystyssä, mutta kun kosketin sitä paperilla se heilutteli jalkojaan ja piiiiiitkiä tuntosarviaan. Yäk! Onneksi Merja tuli hätiin ja pelasti mut torakalta! Meillä oli pari viikkoa sitten pieni ötökkäongelma ja myrkyttäjät kävi täällä. Tämä oli varmaan elellyt mun ammeen alla siitä lähtien.
Tänään saimme hakea univormut, jotka tilattiin jokaiselle omat. Kokeilimme aikaisemmin mitkä housut, paidat ja takit sopivat ja tänään saimme ne, 4 paria paitoja ja housuja ja 2 takkia. Piti sitten sovittaa vielä housuja, ja ne lyhennetään sopivan mittaisiksi. Löysät piti toppejen olla. Sitten vaatteet menivät vielä merkattavaksi, että saa omat pesusta takaisin. Meillä on jokaisella oma numerosarja, jota pitää käyttää joka tilanteessa, kun allekirjoittaa jotain. Mä olen #94621. Nämä vaatteet oli valkoiset, joita siis osaston hlökunta käyttää, ja me leikkausalityypit käytetään työmatkalla. Meillä leikkurityypeillä on sitten töissä siniset asut, jotka ei ole hlökohtaisia.
Tänään oli myös hiekkamyrskyn poikanen. Ilmeisesti aavikolla myrskysi, mutta täällä tuuli vain aavistuksen. Mutta ilma oli utuinen ja kellertävä, ja kyllä tuntui kun olisi hiekkaa kurkussa kun tultiin töistä.
Eilen kävin lounaalla ja elokuvissa todella hienolla compoundilla. Istuimme lounaalla ravintolan terassilla, altaan luona. Oli juuri sopivan lämmin, kun ajattelee että on maaliskuu ja ympäristö oli upea, niin tuntui kun olisi lomalla. Semmoiselta kyllä on oikeastaan tuntunut koko ajan, kun on silti ollut aika rentoa, vaikka onkin istuttu luennoilla ja opiskeltu. Onhan se ainakin vaihtelua tavallisesta työstä. Söimme lounaaksi oikein hyvää grilliruokaa, lammasta ja kanaa. Elokuvan piti olla ”Atonement”, mutta se näytettiinkin vasta illalla, nyt näytettiin irlantilainen elokuva ”Once”. Olin vähän skeptinen elokuvaa kohtaan ja ajattelin etten varmaan edes ymmärrä mitään kun puhuvat irkku aksentilla, mutta onneksi oli teksti ja elokuva oli todella hyvä. Suosittelen! Elokuvan jälkeen kävelimme vähän alueella ja mietimme miten pääsisimme muuttamaan sinne. Jos avaisimme vaikka sivuklinikan siellä!
Turvallisuutta on todella lisätty compoundeilla 5 vuoden takaisten pommitusten jälkeen. Oli toki ennenkin vartijoita ym, mutta tälläkin alueella oli ensin pääportilla tarkistuspiste, jossa auton alle katsottiin peilillä ja tietenkin myös nokkapellin ja alle ja peräluukkuun. Portilla oli myös potero ja aseistettuja vartijoita. Sitten ajoimme pitkän esteradan läpi, oli hidasteita ja betoniporsaita laitettu niin että piti koko ajan mutkitella. Compoundin ympärillä (sisältä ulospäin) oli ensin korkea betoniaita, sen vieressä, parin metrin päässä, betoniporsaita, sitten se esterata ja esteradan vieressä vielä korkea piikkilanka-aika. Aika mahdoton tehtävä ajaa autolla seinien läpi, kuten silloin 5v sitten oli tehty (ei siis toki tätä ollut pommitettu)! Sitten esteradan jälkeen tuli taas portti, jonka luona oli mm panssarivaunu. Siinä jäimme taksin kyydistä, ja ilmoittauduimme vartijalle, jolla oli listalla kaikkien vierailijoiden nimet. Muihin compoundeille ei pääse noin vain, vaan pitää yleensä tuntea joku asukas, tai tässä tapauksessa oli järjestetty elokuvanäytös ja piti tietää joku yhteyshenkilö.

This morning I woke up to find a cockroach in my bathroom! It was lying on it’s back and I thought it was dead. But when I touched it with paperi t moved it legs and wiggled it’s antennae. Yuk! Luckily my flatmate Merja rescued me from the cockroach! We had a slight bugproblem a couple a weeks ago, but the pestcontrol came and took care of it. So I suppose this one lived under my bathtub ever since!
Today we got our individual uniforms from laundry. We all had to try them on earlier, and they had to be loose-fitting, and now we got 4 pairs of tuniks and trousers and 2 jackets. We had to try the trousers on today so that they could adjust the lenghts of them. Then the uniforms went to be marked. We all have our own ”numbercode” that we have to use every time we sign something, and the uniforms are marked with these numbers. For OR, we wear those uniforms to and from work, but at work we change into blue scrubs, that are not individual.
Today there’s a bit of a sandstorm in the desert. It’s not so windy here in Riyadh, but the weather is very hazy and yellowish. And it felt like we had a lot of sand in our throuts when we got back from work!
Yesterday we went to a beautiful compbound for lunch and a movie. We were sitting outside on a patio, by the pool, for lunch. It really felt like I was on vacation, eating outside in march, and with the beautiful surroundings. It has actually kind of felt like a vacation all the time so far, it’s been quite relaxed even though we’ve had a lot of lectures and studying at nights. I guess it’s the change from the regular job. We had a really nice lunch, with barbecued chicken and lamb. We were going to see the movie ”Atonement”, but we found out that wasn’t until the evening. The movie now to be shown was ”Once”, an Irish movie. I was a bit sceptical, especially as I thought I wouldn’t understand anything with the Irish accent, but luckily they had english subtitles, and the movie was really good, I can recommend! After the movie we walked around a bit and wondered how we’d manage to get to live there. Maybe by opening a satellite clinic there…
The level of security has really been ”upped” i find, since the compound bombings 5 years ago. yes, there were good security then as well, but now I think even more. When we came to this compound, first our car was checked at the main gate (where there were armed guards), under the car with a mirror, then under the hood and in the trunk, of course. Then we had to drive through a very long obstacle course, with speedbumps and concrete blocks, so that you had to ”swerve”(like drive in an ”S” all the way). The compound had a concrete wall, then , a few meters from the wall, concrete blocks, then the obstacle course and then a barbed wire fence. Try to drive your car through the fences into that compound like they did 5 years ago (not into this one though). At the next gate, where there was a tank, we had to get out of the taxi and check in with the guards. They had our names on the list and we could get through. Usually you’ll have to know somebody at another compound, or get signed in by the organisers of an event, like this movie, to get into them.
