Nyt on sitten enää 6 kk jäljellä täällä, ja siitäkin on 6 vkoa lomaa, joten eiköhän tämä loppuaika mene kuin siivillä. Töissäkin on nyt hippusen verran mukavampaa, kun se Libanonilainen hoitaja on vielä 4 vkoa lomalla, jee! Sitten onkin syyskuun viimeisellä viikolla kuuden päivän matka Dubaihin, naapurimaahan Yhdistyneihin Arabiemiraatteihin. Me majoitutaan Merjan kanssa samaan 5 tähden Hilton hotelliin, jossa yövyin kun viimeksi olin Dubaissa 6 vuotta sitten. Silloin oli vai pikainen viikonloppuvisiitti, nyt ehtii nähdäkin vähän enemmän! Sen jälkeen on 3 viikon kuluttua 2 viikon loma, josta vietän 9 päivää Goalla, Intiassa. Sitten on 4 viikkoa 2 viikon suomenlomaan, jolloin tapaan upouuden siskonlapsen! Sen jälkeen on 5 viikon kuluttua viikon loma Filippiineille ja sitten olisikin vain enää vajaa 2 viikkoa töitä! Suomeen emme ole ajatelleet palata ihan heti, koska tänne saa vielä jäädä asuntoon 10 päivää sopimuksen päätyttyä ja maahan 2 kk. Joten, ajattelimme mennä Jeddaan punaisen meren rannalle snorklailemaan, ennen paluuta hyytävään helmikuiseen Suomeen!
Täällä meidän asuinalueella on lisätty turvallisuutta viime aikoina. Ensimmäisen kerran huomasin sen kun tuli töistä bussilla pari viikkoa sitten. Pari kertaa päivässä bussi kiertää meidän asuinaluetta ja sairaalaa ja nyt kun on niin tajuttoman kuuma niin mene bussilla, jos se osuu kohdalle. Meillähän on istunut yksi konekiväärimies poterossaan, armeijavaatteissa, ja sitten on sairaalan omia turvallisuusmiehiä, jotka tutkailevat autot ennen kuin ne pääsee meidän asuinalueelle. No, yleensä ne kurkkaa peräluukkuun, mutta ei aina, ja joskus myös konepellin alle. No, tuona päivänä seisoi ihan ensimmäisellä portilla toinen armeijapukuinen konekiväärin kanssa ja yksi vartija katsoi peilillä auton alle. Myös meidän, sairaalan oman bussin, alle. Kun tulin kotiin, kerroin asiasta Merjalle, jolla oli vapaapäivä ja hän sanoi kuulleensa aikaisemmin pamauksen, joka voi toki olla autonrengas tai vastaava. Nämä tehotarkastukset on nyt jatkunut pari viikkoa ja vaikka toinen konekiväärimies ei ihan asennossa portilla seisokkaan, niin olen nähnyt hänen istuvan vartijoiden kopissa. Eilen sitten Merja oli surffatessa päätynyt USA:n suurlähetystön sivuille jossa oli varoitus että tänä viikonloppuna on suunniteltu iskuja länsimaalaisia vastaan. No, aamulla me ei päästy nettiin ja kehittelimme jo salaliitto teorian että sairaala on evännyt pääsyn ettei me saada mitään tietoa mistään. Parin tunnin päästä päästiin eikä täältä nyt mitään hälyttävää löydy, joten ei kai täällä nyt mitään välitöntä vaaraa ole, varsinkin kun nyt kotosalla pysytään.
Täällähän on ollut nyt pari vuotta suht rauhallista. Terroristi hyökkäyksiä on jonkin verran yritetty länsimaalaisia kohtaan, mutta ne on yleensä onnistuttu estämään. Helmikuussa 2007 4 ranskalaista ”turistia” tapettiin tiellä matkalla Madain Salehin rauniokaupunkiin. Toukokuussa 2003 kolmessa samanaikaisessa hyökkäyksessä länsimaalaisia asuinalueita vastaan Riadissa kuoli 34 ja satoja loukkaantui. Al Qaidaa epäillään syyllisenä. Sen jälkeen asuinalueilla onkin turvallisuutta nostettu aika lailla. Myös kesäkuussa 2003 Riadissa tapettiin 4 länsimaalaista.
Kun me saavuttiin Saudeihin, niin ilmoittauduimme Suomen suurlähetystölle, joten eiköhän ne meille ilmoita jos on jotain ilmoittamisen aihetta!

Now I’ve only got 6 months left, and during that time I have 6 weeks of vacation, so I guess the time will pass pretty quickly! The work is now sligthly nicer, as the Lebanese nurse is still on vacation for another 4 weeks! Then, on the last week of September we’re going to Dubai for a 6 days. We’re going to stay in the same 5 star Hilton hotel that I stayed in last time I was there, 6 years ago. But that was only a quick weekend, so there’s more time to enjoy this time. After that there’s 3 weeks until my 2 week vacation when I’m going to Goa, India, for 9 days. After that there’s 4 weeks until my 2 week Finland vacation, where I get to meet my brand new niece ot nephew! Then it’s 5 weeks until a week in the Philippines and then less than 2 weeks of work left! We’re going to stay here for a bit longer though, as you’re allowed to stay for 10 days in the accommodation after you finish your contract. So, as we’re in now hurry to get into freezing Finland in february, we’re going to Jeddah by the Red sea to do some snorkelling!
They’ve increased the security on our compound lately. I first noticed it a few weeks ago, as I took the hospital shuttle bus from work. I take it occasionally now when it’s so freaking hot! There’s been that one guy wearing army clothes and sitting in the ”foxhole” with his machine gun and the hospital security guards check the vehicles before they’re allowed to enter the compound. They usually just check yhe boot of the car (and not even that always) and sometimes they look under the hood as well. But on that day there was another guy with his machine gun standing by the gate and the guards checked even under the hospital shuttle bus with a mirror. When I came home and told my flatmate, who had a day off, said that she’d hears a loud bang earlier, but thought it might be a car or a tire. After that, sometimes the second machine gun guy haven’t always been standing by the gate but I’ve seen him in the guards ”hut”. Yesterday, while surfing the net, my flatmate had stumbled upon a message on the US embassy website warning that there’s a risk of a terrorist attack against westerners in Riaydh this weekend. So, when the internet didn’t work this morning we created a conspiracy theory, where the hospital had shut off the internet so that we wouldn’t get any information. Well, a few hours later the internet started to work again and I couldn’t find any information about an attack, so I guess we’re safe, as long as we stay home anyway.
I’ts been quite peaceful here the past few years, apart from an attack that killed 4 french ”tourist” on route to Madain Saleh, and old town of toumbs. There’s been some attempts, but usually they’ve been prevented. In may 2003 there were 3 simultaneous attacks on western compounds in Riyadh, that killed 34 an injured hundreds. Al Qaida was the prime suspect. After that the security on compounds was increased. 4 westerners were also killed in Riaydh in june 2003.
When we arrived here we gave the Finnish empassy our contact information so I’m sure they’d contact us if there would be any cause for concern.
